JOLIET -- Oswego senior Martin King won two events and set a meet record Thursday during the Southwest Prairie Conference meet at Plainfield South High School.

King won both the 110-meter high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles to finish out his Southwest Prairie career with a flourish.

In the 300 hurdles, King slashed nearly a second off of his own conference record with a time of 38.91.

"In 31 years of coaching," said Oswego assistant coach Lee Enger, "he is the hardest worker I have ever had...he's a special kid to coach."

The senior Panther finished the high hurdles in a time of 14.86.

"I kind of messed up on the first three," King said, "And so I was playing catch up after that."

Also earning All-Conference honors was Nick Wiseman who finished second in the 1600 run with a time of 4:36.41.

Conference honors were given to athletes who finished either first or second in their event.

While the Panthers were racking up points in the track events, crosstown rival Oswego East was winning field events.

Senior Rich Enck won both the shot put and discus events by taming the wind with throws of 51-9 ½ and 137-5 inches, respectively.

"I was close to not making finals (in discus)," Enck admitted, "But then I calmed down, made finals...and so I am pretty excited about that."

Teammate Rickie Walls set a conference record with his winning triple jump of 45-6¼.

Also making All-Conference for the Wolves were Rory Moore in the pole vault and Eric Brown in the 800 run. Brown's finish in the 800 was one of the more exciting events of the afternoon, when he nearly overtook Plainfield North's Kevin Capodice at the finish line.

Capodice, who had built a sizable lead, began to tire near the end of the two-lap race. That's when

Brown kicked into high gear.

"He just died and I gave it my best shot," Brown said.

"I almost caught him."

Capodice finished the race in a time of 2:01.82, with Brown clocking in at 2:01.96.

Plainfield North won the meet on the strength of its relays. The Tigers won three of the four relay events.

Official team scores were not available at press time.
