West badminton players qualify for state

The West Aurora badminton team qualified one singles player and two doubles teams for next week's state tournament and placed second as a team at the Lockport Sectional with 11.5 points. Lockport won the team title with 16 points.

Lauren Henry was the singles qualifier for West, losing to Kacie Cassidy of Lockport by scores of 21-14 and 21-9. Alexis Fox and Karina Diaz beat teammates Emily Kuntzi and Alicia Hizel in the consolation, 21-9, 21-13.

Naperville North Sectional -- Waubonsie Valley was third with 6.5 points with Oswego placing fourth with six points. Host Naperville North was the team champion with 12 points. The doubles team of Jessica Bajorski and Crystil Garrett of Oswego beat Glady Leung and Shama Patel of Naperville North, 5-21, 21-17, 21-13, in the consolation match to qualify for state.

Naperville Central Sectional -- East Aurora was third with seven points behind Naperville Central, which had 15.5. Janely Villa and Melissa Valenzuela of East lost in the championship match to Hanting Wang and Renee Cheng of Naperville Central, 21-12, 21-17, and qualified for state.

Softball

Minooka 8, Oswego East 0 -- Alycia Vandegraft, Sarah Girls, Briana Wright, Katy Meier had hits for Oswego East (4-13, 2-8).

Rosary 5, St. Francis 0 -- Kyle Schalz struck out 15 and allowed just one hit, while banging out three RBIs at the plate. Audra Masters and Karli Simmons each added an RBI for the Royals.

Waubonsie Valley 4, Naperville North 3 -- Ally Seplak and Jess Lobraco led the way for Waubonsie with three hits apiece.

Wheaton Academy 12-3, Aurora Christian 6-10 -- In the nightcap Eryn Glassman led ACHS with four hits and three RBIs while Shannah Morris had three hits and Megan Cryder three runs scores.

Baseball

Yorkville 11, Kaneland 3 -- Kyle Kraber had homer and two RBIs to pace Yorkville, Justin Aloisio had three hits, while Chris Grandchamp, Raul Leon and Adam Szurkowski had two hits apiece.

Somonauk 17, Paw Paw 1 -- Somonauk had a 4-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings but scored 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Shayne Peterson tossed a one-hitter and struck out 10 for the Bobcats, while Brock Kartheiser had three hits and five RBIs, Steve Weismiller three hits and three RBIs and Jared Josefchuk three hits and two RBIs.

Alden-Hebron 5, Aurora Central 4 -- Aurora Central was led by Chad Roscoe's three hits, with Brian O'Donnell picking up two hits and an RBI.

Indian Creek 4-8, Serena 2-2 -- Greg Hess struck out seven to pick up the win in game one, with Nate Peterson and Pete Peterson each driving in runs. Hess had two RBIs in game two, while Reece Bend and Ryan Fox each knocked in a run.

Aurora Christian 12-4, Wheaton Academy 4-5 -- Scott Minta homered and drove in four runs for ACHS in the opener, while Andru Ubert and Mike Friend each contributed a homer and two RBIs. Matt Morse had two hits in the nightcap.

Volleyball

Oswego East d. Romeoville, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17 -- Tim Healy had 26 assists for East, Joey Kowal had 10 kills and four blocks, Kurt Kenworthy had five kills and six blocks and Jorge Castro had seven digs.

Oswego d. Plainfield Central, 25-14, 25-23 -- Jake Wollenberg paced Oswego with eight kills and 12 digs, Tyler Glavan had six kills, Mike Kane and Alex Bogda four kills each and Otavio Fleury 20 assists.

College baseball

Aurora 5-15, Dominican 4-5 -- Tony Wellner had three hits in the opener -- including two doubles -- and drove in two runs, tying Aaron Thor's team record of 22 doubles in a season. Kirk Williamson had two hits and two RBIs for Aurora, while Steve Salazar improved his record to 5-2 on the season, pitching 7.1 innings and striking out eight.

In the nightcap, Josh Damore was 5-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored, Ray Kosmicki had three hits and an RBI, Brian Shriner had two hits and three RBIs, Martin Diaz two hits and an RBI and Steve Brauer two hits. Area Roundup
