AURORA -- Moments after the postgame handshakes were doled out, Rachel Bostick and Bri Rodriguez slowly made their way back toward the Waubonsie Valley huddle.
Along the way, the duo squirted water bottles at each other as they laughed and smiled about the Warriors' latest conquest.
Moments earlier, the two played a crucial role in Waubonsie's 5-0 dismantling of Hinsdale Central in the opening match of pool play at the 11th annual Naperville Invitational on Thursday evening.
"I was surprised (by the score)," said Bostick, who scored twice. "I thought it was going to be a good game."
The match was fairly even through the opening 10 minutes, but the Warriors then broke it open in a hurry.
In a matter of seconds, Waubonsie forced three consecutive corner kicks and converted in the 13th minute when Bostick used her head to redirect a Bri Rodriguez corner attempt into the net.
"When they scored that goal, boy, the air went out of the balloon real quick there," said Hinsdale Central coach Skip Begley, whose team dropped to 3-5-1. "(After that) we just sat back and let them come at us the rest of game."
Waubonsie (6-0-1) continued its assault when Vanessa DiBernardo scored the first of her two goals with a right-footed blast from the top of penalty area past Red Devils goalie Nicole D'Agostino to make it 2-0 in the 18th minute.
Not even three minutes passed when Rodriguez set up D'Agostino's second goal to give the Warriors three goals in an eight-minute span.
"We create such momentum after the first goal that it is just like bam, bam, we want more," Bostick said of Waubonsie's quick-strike ability. "Obviously, we put them away quickly. Once we start scoring, we get on such a roll that nobody can really stop it."
The Warriors took a 3-0 lead into halftime, but they continued to apply pressure in the second half. Waubonsie already learned a tough lesson in not finishing off an opponent when the Warriors saw their 29-match winning streak come to an end when they allowed a late goal to Lincoln-Way Central in late March, allowing the Knights to forge a 2-2 draw.
Catherine McClellan assisted Megan Green's goal in the 66th minute that made it 4-0. Bostick and Rodriguez connected for the final goal in almost the same fashion as the first. In the 68th minute, Rodriguez sent an indirect kick toward Hinsdale Central's net and Bostick knocked the ball in with her head. The two goals scored by Bostick give her five for the season. Rodriguez finished the match with three assists.
"I do love assists," Rodriguez said. "I like them better than goals. I don't know. I guess my position is to be a playmaker, so that is what I like to do." Waubonsie goalie Claire Hanold had a pretty uneventful night with two saves.
The Warriors resume pool play at 10 a.m. Saturday against Geneva.
