That's why the games aren't played on paper.

Despite every stat and intangible seemingly against her team, Aurora Central Catholic girls basketball coach Ella Fay Griffin knew it had a chance Monday against Indian Creek.

She was right.

Led by senior Nydia Griffin, the Chargers (1-5) broke the 50-point barrier for the first time this season to make Indian Creek sweat out a 60-51 win.

Coming into the game, Indian Creek (8-3) had been on a roll. The Timberwolves had won three of their last four by an average margin of 47 points. And led by junior Lindsay Richardson, IC was averaging 61.5 points per game and had yet to lose when it reached 60 points or more.

So when IC went on a 17-0 run to take a 20-6 first quarter lead it looked like more of the same for the team from Shabbona.

But Griffin's team was not about to pack it in. Behind the hot-hand of Griffin, ACC battled back to close the deficit to seven before halftime.

One of two seniors on the team, Griffin tallied nine of her team-high 16 points in the second quarter and was the team's energy all night long.

"Nydia is our spark," said Griffin. "I've asked her to do a lot this season. Increase her shot and her production. I've put a lot on her but she has responded well. She played some aggressive defense that really helped keep us in the game."

Griffin wasn't the only one putting pressure on the Timberwolves. The Charger's full court press forced a bevy of IC turnovers.

But even with their aggressive defense, ACC had no answer for Richardson and senior Samantha Wong. The pair scored 21 and 20 points respectively, including three 3-pointers from Richardson.

"They're good players," said Griffin. "They know how to score."

Despite the loss, Griffin felt the game could be a good stepping stone for the future of her team.

"We are learning to do the little things to win games and it's not paying off...yet," said Griffin. "We're getting there though. We'll learn to finish and capitalize on our opportunities. The ball just didn't bounce our way tonight."
