Rosary senior settles into comfort zone

Emily Reuland loves playing tennis indoors.

So the rainy conditions that forced the Rosary senior to play her first two state tournament matches inside at the Hinsdale Racquet Club didn't bother her one bit.

On Thursday, the four-time state qualifier put away numerous aces and won her first two state matches handily ( 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0) to advance to third-round play today. And the forecast makes it look like another day on the indoor courts.

"I always feel solid indoors," said Reuland, who finished in the top 16 at state last year. "You don't have any of the conditions such as sun, wind and cold. Just nothing to distract you that can throw your game off. All my shots played right on."

However, there were aspects of the day that Reuland was not happy about.

"It was a crummy day," she said. "We waited around at Conant where we were supposed to play for about an hour. And then there were no courts set aside at the Hinsdale Racquet Club, so we had to wait for a bunch of women's league matches to finish. Our match that was supposed to start at 8 a.m. didn't get started until 10:30."

Reuland's teammates Angelina Goheen and Katie King won their first match but were eliminated in the second.

"They had two three-set matches," Royals coach John Tsang said. "They were able to work the point and set up their volleys and get good court positioning in the first match. When they're at their best, they're hard to beat. In the second match, they made too many errors and fell a little bit short.

Because of the poor weather conditions, IHSA officials canceled the backdraw, so the Rosary doubles team will not be able to pick up additional points in the consolation bracket.

Among the area doubles teams that won their two matches Thursday were Adelina Koleva and Christina Chang of IMSA and Brooke and Haley Henry of West Aurora. Oswego East's Jourdan Jackson and Kylee Jackson won their first-round doubles match and are still alive in the tournament.

Geneva's Claire Chlasta and Annie Tourte lost their first-round match in doubles, but the Vikings' Kayla Fujimoto won her singles match and advanced to the second round.

Also in singles, Oswego's Breanne Vergonet and Oswego East's Kelly Zaprzal both lost in the first round.
