Run off 14 straight points in any sport and you stand a good chance of winning.
Do it in volleyball and odds are you're dominating the match.
Glenbard East did just that Tuesday, beating West Aurora 25-9, 25-20 in DuPage Valley Conference action.
"I'm pretty (ticked) off right now," West coach Tolis Koskinaris said. "When you get only nine points, that's more than just athleticism in volleyball. I've played on mediocre teams in terms of talent and there's still ways within the sport -- because you're confined in a box -- that you can compete. We haven't been able to figure that out.
"It's not going to happen at varsity -- they're too old," said Koskinaris, who has implemented a new style in his first year. "The younger levels, they're getting it. Outside of a couple kids -- freshmen that we brought up, a sophomore -- I just don't know if there's enough time (this season)."
The lone bright spot for the Blackhawks was outside hitter Mikey Schwertfegr (four kills), named an MVP at a tournament earlier this year.
"He's a class act we brought in," Koskinaris said. "He's been a rock for us all year."
The complete opposite of West (2-11, 0-11) right now would be Glenbard East (25-0, 9-0), which displayed skill and athleticism.
Rams setter Jason Jaent had four aces during the first-set run, finishing with seven for the match and 13 assists.
"We had one freshman year," Jaent said of the long run. "It was awesome. When we get on runs like that, it's hard for them to come back."
Rams outside hitter Mark Jones had six kills, eight assists and three blocks and Kevin Farrell recorded five digs for the emerging powerhouse.
"We came out, we were firing on all cylinders in the first game," Glenbard East coach Marci Maier said. "In the second game, (West) made some nice blocks and our intensity and coverage could have been a little better." Boys Volleyball: Glenbard East def. West Aurora 25-9, 25-20
