SOMONAUK --The Hinckley-Big Rock Lady Royals were in complete control of Thursday's game with Somonauk from the tip-off to the final buzzer.

The 70-11 win over the Lady Bobcats proved to be a mismatch, but there were still positives both teams could find from the contest.

The Lady Royals (15-3) started off on a 12-0 run, with the scoring being spread around the team. Kaitlin Phillips scored seven of her eight points in the first quarter.

Even with the 16-2 first quarter lead for H-BR, it could have been worse.

"We really count on hitting some buckets to get set up defensively," H-BR coach Greg Burks said. "We were missing some easy shots inside. Other than that we played pretty well defensively."

The Lady Royals would stretch their lead to 33-5 at halftime behind an offense that spread the ball around and had many different scorers joining in the action.

Five different Royals finished with eight or more points, including Phillips and Tess Godhardt with eight each. Jenna Thorp, Bianca Edmeier and Melissa Herrmann contributed 12 points apiece. With the big lead H-BR was able to play some its bench players significant minutes, and that can only help a team out in the long run.

"The biggest strength of our team is our depth," said Burks. "I hope everyone on the team understands how important they are, because the fact we can go to our ninth and 10th people on varsity roster and have a good practice is crucial to any success we are going to have. I feel confident that whoever is out there is going to get the job done."

A 21-0 quarter is difficult even in football terms, but in basketball it could be even more rare and frustrating. Both coaches talked about that third quarter and their respective team's frustration and dominance.

"I was really disappointed with the way we played in the third quarter because some of the effort was lacking and we had to call two timeouts," Somonauk coach Jim Farrell said.

Burks went the other way.

"We were able to come out and have crisper ball movement and really execute pretty well on both ends of the floor," he said.

Audrey Weismiller led the Lady Bobcats with six points, including the lone basket in the first quarter to get Somonauk on the board.

"She is a sophomore and still learning the game," said Farrell. "Plus she was playing against maybe an all-state player in (Herrmann)." Girls Basketball: H-BR 70, Somonauk 11
