SUGAR GROVE -- Rosary's girls golf team was off to a great start Tuesday at Woodbine in Homer Glen in a dual meet against Lemont before storms washed the meet out.

So Wednesday, back at home against Waubonsie Valley, the Royals wanted to continue the good play that started a day before.

Rosary was able to accomplish that, topping the Warriors, 185-190, in a dual meet at Bliss Creek. The Royals were paced by a pair of 44s from Natalie Haines and Courtney Classen.

"I think they were really upset that they weren't able to finish that yesterday," Rosary coach Scott Walker said. "They came out today and seemed focused and wanted to pick up where they left off."

For Haines, a junior who's a three-year varsity starter and the team's No. 1 player, it was a nerve-wracking scenario. Typically for her, when she has a good round, she has trouble following it up. But when her drive on No. 1 Wednesday went straight, Haines knew she was on her way to a solid afternoon.

"My drives were going straight," Haines said. "My irons were solid and everything was kind of working with me, especially on that last par five (No. 9). You can either lay up or go over (a creek in the middle of the fairway), but I took a chance with my driver, saved the best for last (a par), which was nice."

It was Haines' top score of the season, but she doesn't want to stop there.

"This was good, but with my expectations, I know I can do a lot better, especially being a junior," Haines said. "I've played this course for over two years. It's comfortable."

Rosary (2-2) was so deep Wednesday that the Royals even received a 44 from Natalie Nelson on the junior varsity level. On varsity, a 46 from Deb Happ and a 51 from Dana Edwards rounded out the scorecard.

"We have so many girls that are so close with their scores right now," Walker said. "It's hard to determine sometimes who's going to play on varsity. It is not a bad problem to have at all."

Waubonsie was playing without sophomore Jessica Buys, the team's No. 1 player. Already recovering from a knee injury suffered in the spring during track season, Buys injured her back in Bartlett Tuesday and couldn't play Wednesday. Her return is uncertain.

So first-year coach John Farnan was looking for somebody to step up in her stead. Enter No. 5 golfer Meghan Turley. Turley turned in a 43 to earn medalist honors.

"It was great seeing Meghan coming in with a 43, especially being a sophomore," Farnan said. "That's a positive from this match. We just have to hope somebody else steps up, and today Meghan did that."

Aliki Smith (48), Debbie Bornok (49) and Alisha Fahrenz (50) were the other counting scores for the Warriors. Kelly DeKing also shot a 50.

Farnan and the Warriors have been searching for positives. After finishing second in a season-opening invite at Marian Central, they have struggled to a 1-3 dual-meet record.

"We started the year off well," Farnan said. "I don't know if that scared the girls or something because we were second at Marian, but ever since then, they've been afraid to make mistakes. We'll see what happens from here. We just have to get a mindset going."
