Warriors score early and often in easy win

May 18, 2008

The bases were loaded in the top of the second inning for Waubonsie outfielder Brad Custer. With a 3-1 count, he ripped a single to left, scoring the first two runs of a seven-run inning that put the Warriors ahead early at 8-0.

Eight hits in the first two innings put the Warriors out to a big lead on Saturday, and they went on to beat Oswego 12-4.

"I just tried to attack and get ready for the regional coming up and throw strikes," Waubonsie pitcher Ryan Servos said. "It's nice (run support), because you know you can just go out there and attack, not worry about losing the lead, just attacking the hitters."

Servos pitched three innings for the Warriors, allowing one hit and no runs as he struck out three Panthers.

Trailing 9-0 in the fourth, Oswego (13-18) showed life as third baseman Kevin Zmuda doubled to lead off. He scored on an Adam Brooking single.

In the fifth, with Tyler Brooks on first, Zmuda struck again, launching the ball deep into the outfield for an RBI triple. But he was left stranded at third.

Even with Zmuda's play, the Panthers still trailed 9-2 after five innings.

"Our pitching early on gave us a bad start, and fielding we made some errors," Zmuda said. "We just weren't hitting the first pitcher, but we played a lot of games this week and maybe some of us were tired - we should've come more ready to play today."

The Warriors (15-17) added runs in the fifth and seventh, bringing the score to 12-3 after 6½ innings. Oswego managed one more run in the bottom of the seventh, when Steve Figgins singled to push across one. Baseball: Waubonsie Valley 12, Oswego 4
