Dominant performance
Geneva controls offensive action in win over Wolves
In what gave the appearance of a close game, Geneva gave a dominant offensive performance against Oswego East at the Rosary Regional on Wednesday .
The fifth-seeded Vikings defeated the Wolves, the No. 12 seed, 3-1 and move to Friday's championship game against Benet Academy.
Although they controlled the action well, Geneva didn't get on the board until the 19th minute. Emily Hinchman passed to Natalie Johnson, who knocked a crossing pass toward Megan Spear. It wasn't clear whether Spear or an Oswego East defender deflected it into the net, but Spear was in the right place and got credit for the score.
"I just kind of crossed it and our team was on it and were pressuring it really hard," Johnson said. "Megan was right there pressuring and she got a touch, but the final touch was off the other team."
The Wolves showed some offensive spark late in the first half. Their first shot on goal actually tied the contest at 1 as Jill Hall headed one home from the right side on a Joanna Lee assist.
Hinchman scored the eventual winner in the 33rd minute on a header from Johnson's corner kick.
"Natalie got out there really quick to set up that corner kick and we were all just ready and we were all flying in there. I was just lucky enough to get my head on it first," Hinchman said.
The Vikings put eight shots on goal in the half, but East only managed three.
Geneva scored only once in the second half, that one also coming on a Johnson corner kick which Abbey Schroeder converted from the right side.
The Vikings dominated, however, as they repeatedly regrouped and continually attacked. They fired 19 total shots at Wolves' goalkeeper Gabby DePoister, but Oswego East was only able to shoot four times on goal.
Alyssa Berendt, Emily Fechner, Emily Saunders, and Sarah Tennant were continually active in the Geneva attack.
The Vikings face Benet for the title with an overall record of 11-7-1. Class AA Girls Soccer Regional: Geneva 3, Oswego East 1
