Bajkowski's goals ice victory for Panthers
With under 10 minutes to go in the second half, Oswego freshman midfielder Lisa Bajkowski launched a ball into the upper left corner of the goal from the top of the penalty box, breaking a 2-2 tie Tuesday against crosstown rival Oswego East.
The Panthers beat the Wolves 4-2, adding another goal in the final three minutes of play from Bajkowski.
"It feels good (to win) because they really came out hard and we were down a couple goals and we came back. I just shot it, and it went in," said Bajkowski after the victory.
The first half started off with the Panthers in attack mode. They managed to keep the ball on the Wolves side of the pitch for most of the half. Just four minutes into the match, Oswego's Ashley Baumgartner made a nice pass to Nora Bishop who crossed it to Kaitlin Straits. Straits, with her first attempt of the night, headed the ball off the cross towards the goal but it was stopped by Wolves goalie Brittani Whaley.
The Panthers would not slow down there, as Emily Swanson's crossing attempt was stopped by the Wolves' Whaley, and a shot by Katherine Palmer was deflected off a Wolves defender.
Following the deflection, Oswego East forward Kerri Jednachowski got the ball at midfield and raced towards the goal, breaking away from the Oswego defenders. Mid-stride, she pulled her leg back and fired a shot on goal, but was unsuccessful as it sailed over the cross bar.
Both Oswego's Seffrood and Oswego East's Whaley continued to make saves, as the defense for both schools stepped up and concluded the half without allowing a goal.
"We could've played better the first half, but we tried to come out in the second half with more positive attitudes and hustle more to the ball," Jednachowski said. "It's a big game for us because half of them are on our club teams. We still want to come out and beat them, show our friends up."
Hustle they did, as the Wolves opened the half strong, attacking much harder than in the first. Just 1:23 into the half, Oswego East's Aly Lansky broke the scoreless tie after she sent the ball coasting over the goalies head, giving the Wolves a 1-0 advantage.
Less than three minutes later, Oswego's Bishop tied up the score after catching the ball with her body and shooting it past the keeper.
With 24 minutes to go in the half, the Wolves' Jednachowski snuck a ball past the Oswego goalie, putting the Wolves on top again, 2-1.
After chipping a previous attempt wide right of the goal, Oswego's Straits managed to chip one over the head of the goalie, tying the game a second time for the Panthers at 2-2.
