Waubonsie breezes past East Aurora

October 24, 2009

The Waubonsie Valley football team is used to two things by now: winning and playing in cold and rainy conditions.

The Warriors made it four straight wins by beating East Aurora 42-6 on Friday. With the win, the Warriors secured a playoff spot at 6-3 overall (5-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference).

"We've had five weeks of this weather," Waubonsie coach Paul Murphy said. "I told the kids, 'The weather is all the matter of your mindset.' They have to embrace it. It can be like this all the way until Thanksgiving. I'm praying for snow because I loved playing football in the snow when I was a kid. The only thing we haven't played in yet is the snow."

East Aurora, which was playing without starting quarterback Bryan Robinson (he suffered a high ankle injury last week) capped the season at 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the UEC. The Tomcats haven't won since Week 6 of last season. Robinson was replaced by senior Alex Alvarado.

"I thought (Alvarado) did a great job," East coach Bill Bryant said.

Waubonsie scored twice in the first quarter, three times in the second and once in the third. Maurice Bowman scored two touchdowns while Kenny Clay, Tommy Kolzow, Mark Szott and Tyree Dickerson scored one apiece while kicker Scott Kuehn went 6-for-6 on extra points.

Tinard Thompson's 60-yard touchdown run with 9:14 left in the game finally put East Aurora on the board.

Bryant said he will miss the Tomcats' graduating seniors.

"We've got a great senior class," Bryant said. "I'm really going to miss them. The most important thing I think right now is how proud I am of this group of kids. Even though we went 0-9, they never quit. These kids have a special place in my heart, and I love them to death."

Coal City 14, Plano 8
Coal City scored on a punt return and fumble return to down the Reapers in an Interstate Eight crossover game.

J.J. Cannon ran in a touchdown and 2-point conversion for Plano in the third quarter, but that was all the Reapers could manage offensively. Plano was without three offensive starters.

"It was a tough one. We just got beat," Reapers coach Jim Green said. "We hope to be back to full strength next week."
