Clay runs Warriors past Hawks

September 12, 2009

STREAMWOOD -- Waubonsie Valley quarterback Kenny Clay suffered three interceptions in the first two and a half quarters of Friday night's Upstate Eight Conference game against Bartlett at Millennium Field.

What he did with his feet, however, proved far more important. Clay tied the game with a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, then pulled off a 75-yard, fourth-quarter quarterback scramble for the winning points in a 21-14 Warriors victory.

Clay rushed for 101 yards on 11 attempts and proved his team's only reliable weapon on the ground against a stingy Bartlett defense.

Clay scampered 12 yards on an option out of the spread formation for a touchdown to tie the score at 14 with 6:46 left in the third quarter, ending a 51-yard drive.

With 10:10 left in the game, Clay went back to pass and eluded a defender, ran around the right edge then up the middle all the way for the 75-yard go-ahead points.

Warriors linebacker Mike Crain intercepted a deflected pass with 2:17 left at Bartlett's 21, and Bartlett's final possession ended with John Giba's interception for Waubonsie (2-1, 1-0 UEC) with 14 seconds left at the Warriors' 30-yard line.

Bartlett (1-2, 0-1) had taken the lead late in the second quarter thanks to its defense and Warriors special teams mistakes.

Waubonsie scored first after dodging an Anthony Pineda interception that had given Bartlett possession at the Warriors' 21 on the game's first play from scrimmage. After a missed Busch 31-yard field goal, the Warriors drove 80 yards on their second possession and scored on a 37-yard pass from Clay to wide receiver Malcolm Buckner.

Clay finished 10-of-16 passing for 101 yards with the three interceptions. Buckner caught eight passes for 88 yards.
