Woman wields a shovel to bash car
Maria Razo, 23, of the 200 block of Plum Street, Aurora, was charged with felony criminal damage to property after she smashed the windshield and scratched the body of a 2001 Mitsubishi parked in the 0-99 block of Blackhawk Street at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the Kane County state's attorney's office said. According to Aurora police, two women watched Razo cause $5,000 in damage to the car, while Razo accused one of the women of "messing" with her husband.

Less than three months after he was released from prison, a 28-year-old Oswego resident has been charged with stabbing a man.

11th conviction gets man a stint in federal prison
Christopher Mosby, 44, was sentenced this week to five years in federal prison on drug charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago. Mosby was one of eight people arrested in 2008 during "Operation Land O' Lakes" -- a reference to "butter" made by drug dealers.

Two Aurora police officers were injured when their squads hit each other late Wednesday night on the city's West Side.

Cops believe teens connected to multiple car burglaries
Aurora police have charged two teenagers with breaking into two unlocked vehicles in late October. Elwin Delacruz, 18, of the 2200 block of Exeter Court; and Jeremy Vermilyer, 17, of the 2300 block of Twilight Drive, Aurora, were charged Wednesday with two felony counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, Aurora police said.

Convicted murderer fights former lawyers
The attorneys who lost the 2003 murder trial of a Joliet man charged with strangling his next-door neighbor and torching her duplex claimed they left it up to their client to waive his right to a jury and denied keeping him from taking the witness stand. Law partners Tom Breen and Todd Pugh, of Chicago, both said 36-year-old Vincent Trevizo was the one who wanted a judge to decide his fate. The two lawyers also said Trevizo was in no hurry to testify at his own trial.

Jury finds Aurora man guilty of beating girlfriend
A jury needed less than an hour Tuesday to find an Aurora man guilty of the brutal beating of his girlfriend in 2007, and he now faces up to seven years in prison.

Man caught with pot lies about age name
Sylvester Green, 32, of the 600 block of Rosewood Avenue, Aurora, was charged with felony possession of marijuana and obstructing justice as well as misdemeanor possession of marijuana after he was found in possession of between 10 and 30 grams of marijuana, then gave officers a false name, on Tuesday in Aurora, the Kane County state's attorney's office said.

Fire burns out pallet company building
Aurora firefighters contained a fire Tuesday evening at Interstate Pallet Company on Mitchell Road in Aurora, just north of Indian Trail. No injuries were reported.

'No refusal' weekend nabs 14 in Kane County
The largest effort in Kane County to date to try to keep drunken drivers off the road resulted in 14 arrests over the Halloween weekend, including four in Elgin, authorities said Tuesday.

St. Charles police say a 26-year-old West Chicago man wandered into a stranger's apartment Halloween night - while they were still home - then choked and officer who tried to make an arrest.

Missing Montgomery teen found safe
Tiffany Bonilla, 16, missing since Oct. 20, was found in another state, Montgomery police said Monday. Arrangements were being made to return her home. Police said media reports about Bonilla led to her being found. "The media was responsible for her safe return," according to Montgomery police.

ID thefts targeted DeKalb County banks
DeKalb County Sheriff's Police said they have broken up what Sheriff Roger Scott describes as "a major identity-theft ring" that stole between $50,000 and $100,000 from the bank accounts of a dozen county residents, and may have stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from victims throughout the state.

Man pleads not guilty to watching women sleep
A 19-year-old Aurora man accused of slipping into unlocked apartments to watch women sleep and touch their legs pleaded not guilty Monday to felony trespassing charges. Quincy L. Forrester faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the charges, filed last month after a state trooper saw him acting suspiciously outside his apartment complex in the 2800 block of Amli Lane, police said.

Truck fire closes tollway
No one was hurt when a semi truck caught fire on westbound I-88 just west of the Winfield Road exit shortly before 7:30 a.m. Monday, but at least a few commuters were delayed. Rescue crews closed down all westbound lanes for nearly an hour while they extinguished the flames.

Naperville man charged with gunfire in Aurora
Azael Ramirez, 27, 700 block of Inland Circle, Naperville, was charged Friday with felonies attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a weapon. He is accused of firing a gun several times at a car in Aurora on March 10, the Kane County state's attorney's office said.

Two adults and two children were hospitalized Wednesday night following a head-on collision near Plainfield. About 9 p.m., two vehicles were involved in a head-on crash on Route 126 near Ridge Road in unincorporated Kendall County, authorities said.

Aurora cops hunt scammers
Aurora police are asking for help identifying a man who is wanted for scamming an Aurora couple out of about $3,000 in cash and jewelry. On April 21, the suspect and a woman, approached the couple — a 59-year-old man and 56-year-old woman — while they shopped inside a supermarket. The suspect and the woman told them they had just won the lottery and asked for a ride, police said.

Key Wester stabbing called a hoax

Archery suspect dies in jail
A man accused of shooting a woman in the face with a compound bow last month died Monday after a reported fall in his DeKalb County Jail cell, authorities said. Gary Aspengren, 64, of 202 S. King St., Cortland, was charged on Sept. 28 with aggravated battery involving great bodily harm, aggravated battery involving a weapon, armed violence and aggravated domestic battery.

A St. Charles man was sentenced to six years in prison Thursday after being convicted of residential burglary.

Insane Deuces member gets the maximum
The last member of the Insane Deuces gang in Aurora who was arrested in a 2005 sweep was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison Thursday morning. Romell Handley, 25, of Aurora was among 15 Insane Deuces gang members in Aurora who were convicted on federal racketeering charges.

Gang members serving 16 years to life
In 2005, some 16 members of Aurora's Insane Deuces were charged with racketeering, accusing them of being part of a conspiracy that committed three murders, several attempted murders and more than $1 million in drug trafficking. Since then, all but one of the men has been convicted and sentenced. Miguel Martinez, a former Aurora resident, was charged but has not been located. Federal authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest.

Fines for Aurora's red-light cameras to begin Tuesday
Starting on Tuesday, motorists will be fined $100 for running red lights at three city intersections that are equipped with camera enforcement systems, police warned Thursday.

Crash closes Butterfield Road
Butterfield Road near Eola Road on Aurora's northeast side was closed early Thursday afternoon after a car crashed into a pick-up truck. The drivers were taken to area hospitals with apparently minor injuries.

A Montgomery man is alleged to have shot and killed a resident's dog after mistaking it for coyotes running after his cats, Montgomery police said.

Another cold-case acquittal
A Kane County judge has acquitted another defendant from Operation First Degree Burn, the massive 2007 sweep that charged 31 men in Aurora murders dating back two decades. Judge Tim Sheldon this week found Juan Verdugo, 27, of Aurora, not guilty in the Dec. 21, 2003, murder of 17-year-old Robert Rem.

Felony charges filed in family dispute
Patrick McCullah, 27, of the 1800 block of Waverly Way, Montgomery, was charged with felony domestic battery and unlawful restraint after he hit a family member and kept her from leaving home Tuesday in Aurora, the Kane County state's attorney's office said. McCullah has previously been convicted of domestic battery, prosecutors said.

Update: An Aurora teenager who went missing for three days turned up safe at a relative's home Monday. The teen's mother called Kane County sheriff's police Friday night when the girl wasn't at the school. Her family spent the weekend putting up fliers around Aurora.

Fire damages Sandwich church and rectory
Update: Firefighters saved records from going up in flames when a fire started in the rectory of a catholic church Tuesday night in southwest Sandwich. Firefighters responded at 8:43 p.m. Tuesday to a fire in the rectory at St. Paul Catholic Church at 110 N. Eddy St., according to Sandwich Fire Chief Bill King.

170 tickets issued in special traffic detail on Route 30
More than 170 tickets were handed out to motorists in a multi-jurisdictional traffic safety campaign sponsored by the Oswego and Plainfield police departments last month.
