Cops believe teens connected to multiple car burglaries
Aurora police have charged two teenagers with breaking into two unlocked vehicles in late October. Elwin Delacruz, 18, of the 2200 block of Exeter Court; and Jeremy Vermilyer, 17, of the 2300 block of Twilight Drive, Aurora, were charged Wednesday with two felony counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, Aurora police said.
Delacruz and Vermilyer were arrested at 2:15 a.m. on Halloween when an Aurora police officer spotted the two inside a pickup truck near Spinnaker Drive and Rosehall Lane, police said. The officer smelled liquor and marijuana on the men, police said.
After investigating, Aurora police also connected the men to two burglaries from unlocked cars -- an Oct. 24 burglary in the 1900 block of Indian Hill Lane where a $200 GPS was taken and an Oct. 30 burglary in the 2400 block of Holland Court, where an iPod and knife, worth $350, were taken.
Police said they believe Delacruz and Vermilyer may be linked to numerous other car burglaries in the Aurora area.
Police remind residents to lock their cars and remove valuables. They say thieves will generally not break into a vehicle unless they see something worth stealing.
