Economy
Lauzen: Supports the Fair Tax plan for a national sales tax instead of an income tax; would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003; would repeal the alternative minimum tax; would make the repeal of the estate tax permanent; supports paying for existing programs before starting new ones.
Oberweis: Opposes new taxes; would make the Bush tax cuts permanent; would repeal the alternative minimum tax; would make the repeal of the estate tax permanent; supports the Taxpayer Choice Act, which would offer flat tax rates as an option; supports reducing illegal immigration to help the economy.
Dilger: Supports tax cuts with a fiscal stimulus package to help the poor and middle class; would adjust the alternative minimum tax for inflation.
Democrats
Foster: Prefers a plan to shift burden away from middle class and would uphold Bush tax cuts for tuition, child care tax credits and marriage penalty; suggests returning tax rates to those of the early 1990s when economic expansion and a paying down of national debt occurred.
Laesch: Wants a tax code that offers incentives for going green; would repeal Bush tax breaks for nation’s highest earners and eliminate the alternative minimum tax that “imposes a large tax burden on middle class.”
Stein: Simplify U.S. tax code; work to fix alternative minimum tax to ensure the rich are paying fair share and that middle class are protected from rising inflation.
Serra: Calls for lower taxes to help middle class; supports new tax cuts for health care, college and retirement.
