Oswego police warn on e-mail scam
Two Oswego residents recently reported they had received an unsolicited e-mail which appears to be a scam from a foreign country, Oswego police said.
One was from adamsholdings@gmail.com in which the sender identified himself as Tony Adams from Tony Adams Textiles from London, police said.
The e-mail was a work-from-home job offer with generous financial rewards. The offer requested the recipient to assist in the processing of payments for materials purchased from the company.
The second was from info@hangsengbank.com in which the sender identified himself as Mr. Wang Qui from Hang Seng Bank of Hong Kong. This was a business proposal with a promise of millions of dollars, police said.
There has been a significant increase in the number of these scams in the past few months. U.S. citizens will continue to see these offers as long as the perpetrators continue to receive money, police said. There is no indication these scams will stop in the near future.
While police warn of these scams, they continually see Oswego residents fall victim and lose thousands of dollars. Most, if not all of the time, this money is never recovered, police said. Also, because the offenders are most likely from a foreign country, they are not located. Police urge everyone to contact police before depositing an unsolicited check or sending money to anyone other than a family member or friend.
