Shooting reported outside ER at Aurora hospital

AURORA -- Shots were fired outside Rush-Copley Medical Center after two teens were taken there for treatment from an earlier gang-related fight in  Aurora on Thursday night.

No one was hurt by the gunfire, police said.

About 8 p.m., Aurora police responded to a 911 call for shots fired at Rush-Copley, 2000 Ogden Ave. on the city's far northeast side. Upon arrival, officers found several shell casings in a parking lot south of the emergency room entrance, according to a release from Aurora police.

Police said two 19-year-old Aurora men, who were involved in a fight about an hour earlier inside the Westfield Shopping Mall in the 0-99 block of Fox Valley Center Drive, ended up at the emergency room for treatment of their injuries sustained in the fight, the release said.

Both men were apparently driven to the hospital by acquaintances and arrived about 30 minutes apart. When they spotted each other in the hospital, a verbal argument began and one of the men, accompanied by an woman and an infant, left the hospital, the release said.  

When they entered a teal, four-door Nissan Altima, a dark colored SUV pulled up behind them and someone inside the vehicle opened fire, striking the car several times.

The other 19-year-old left the hospital shortly after the shots were fired and sought treatment at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

The Altima that was hit by gunfire was located by officers near Fifth and North avenues within minutes of the shooting. It was being driven by the woman who was with the 19-year-old who left the hospital first, the release said.

However, neither the man, nor the infant were in the car when it was stopped. It is currently being processed by Aurora police evidence technicians. Investigators have identified the persons involved in the incident and talked with most of them, but they have little information on the black SUV from which the shots were fired, the release said.

No arrests had been made as of late Friday morning and no one is currently being held. The incident appears to be gang-related, police said.
