DCFS investigating death of 6-week-old Elgin boy

November 5, 2009

ELGIN — The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the death of a 6-week-old Elgin boy last week.

Armando Ruiz, of 879 Van St. in Elgin, was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m. Oct. 26 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, according to Elgin police. An autopsy was conducted Wednesday by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The infant allegedly died in an “overlay incident,” authorities said.

Elgin police said that may refer to an incident in which an adult accidentally rolls over onto an infant while napping with him. Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda said more details would be available Thursday.
