Ballot taking shape for 2010 election
JOLIET -- It's all over, for now.
The deadline for filing petitions for next year's elections ended at 5 p.m. Monday. Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots got the last few in the final hour of the allotted time period. The brief filing season opened at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 26.
After locking the doors Monday, Schultz Voots and her staff went right back to work.
"We are proofing all the names to make sure the spellings are correct, and we just have to wait to see if anyone files any objections," she said, not long after 5 p.m.
There is also a prescribed period for filing objections to petitions, and it ends at 4:30 p.m. Monday for the county-wide races and at the same time Nov. 13 for precinct committeemen.
Although everything went smoothly, Schultz Voots did get about a dozen unusual telephone calls. Because there are elections today in states such as New York and Virginia, some people thought there might be one in Illinois. No such luck.
"It is the first Tuesday of November and there is definitely no election tomorrow," she said firmly.
