Yorkville man struck by semi

October 27, 2009

A man was in serious but "stable" condition after he was struck by a semi as he was walking down the middle of the road early Sunday in Yorkville.

At 2:35 a.m. police responded to a 37-year-old man who was struck and seriously injured by a semi as he was walking on Ill. 47 near Walker Road, according to Illinois State Police Joliet District Sgt. Theodore Johnson.

The man and his wife were returning home from a Halloween party when their vehicle ran out of gas, according to Johnson. They set off to walk to the nearest gas station when the man "became agitated and started walking back to the vehicle," and his wife continued on, Johnson said.

The man was walking just right of the center lane when the driver of a semi came upon him. The driver attempted to swerve to miss the man but "brushed him, knocking him off the roadway into a ditch," Johnson said. The driver of the semi called 911and the victim -- who suffered serious to critical injuries -- was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora where he underwent surgery.

Early Monday the man was serious but "stable" condition after the surgery, according to Johnson.

The wife was not with her husband when he was hit but she learned of the accident when she saw emergency vehicles passing her by on the road, Johnson said. She said her husband had consumed alcohol at the party.

The road on which the man was traveling was not lit, Johnson said, and the semi sustained frontal damage.

At this point, no charges are being filed, Johnson said.
