Losers: Land and those who love it
When I was 12 years old, I lived in the small town of Parkville, Mo. One lazy summer afternoon, while walking through the hundreds of acres of woods that surrounded my neighborhood, I came across a line of wooden stakes with orange flags at the top. Actually, it was two lines, running in parallel, slicing through the trees. With nothing else to do that day, I decided to follow them.
Opportunity knocks for local towns

Hastert defends big profit
The day after a watchdog group questioned House Speaker Dennis Hastert's $2 million profit on a land deal near the proposed Prairie Parkway, the Yorkville Republican defended the transaction.
Speaker's finances
Members of the U.S. House and Senate released details of their personal income and holdings this week in annual financial disclosure statements. Highlights of the statement by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Yorkville, include:
Hastert's $2 million land profit
U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert made a $2 million profit on land sold to a real estate developer within a few miles of the proposed Prairie Parkway, a Beacon News investigation has found.
On June 25, 60 area veterans took an Honor Flight, an all-expenses paid trip to visit the World War II National Memorial in Washington, D.C. Beacon News reporter Andre Salles and photographer/videographer Heather Eidson went along. You can share the experience at a special Web page that includes interviews with some of the veterans, a first-hand account of the trip and all of the newspaper's coverage of the event.
