HSP receives grant for senior project

The Humanitarian Service Project has announced that it is the recipient of a $9,360 grant from the Kraft Employee Fund in support of its Senior Citizen Project program. This is the seventh straight year of this award, which has been funded by contributions from Kraft Foods employees and retirees in the Chicago area.

HSP's Senior Citizen Project aims to help serve needy seniors in Kane and DuPage counties.

The KEF grant will help pay for the nutritious food that is the major portion of the 90-pound monthly deliveries to the 120 seniors' homes, including a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, assorted frozen meats, fresh breads, and nonperishables. They also receive paper products, household supplies and personal care items, as well as a gift from a Secret Pal. In addition, they can put items on a wish list that would make everyday living more comfortable, such as small household appliances.

The Senior Citizen Project was established in 1982. Sponsorship of a needy senior can mean the difference between their being able to continue to live independently, with improved physical and mental well-being and, due to their resources, being compelled to enter an assisted-living facility paid by Medicaid. Sponsorships are available for one year or half a year and can be paid monthly. A full year's sponsorship is $800 and a co-sponsorship is $400. Other HSP programs include the Children's Birthday Project, providing 1,100 low-income children with a 20- to 25-pound package of new toys, books, school supplies and everything needed for a birthday party on their birthdays; Feed the Kids, which during the summer supplements the diets of needy children who receive federally subsidized school meals; and the Christmas Offering, which provides gifts to low-income children and three weeks' worth of groceries, frozen meats and fresh produce to 150 local families.
