Police gear up to run for Special Olympics

October 29, 2009

Aurora Police Sgt. Doug Podschweit is encouraging residents to go out for a run on Nov. 7.

"Come on out to Blackberry Farm for the 'Run for Athletes,' a 5K run that will benefit the Special Olympics of Illinois," Podschweit said.

This is the second year for the run, and Podschweit hopes it will be even bigger than the first.

"Last year we had 62 people," he said. "I'm hoping we get between 100 and 125 this year. Last year we had 15 officers run the race. I'm running this year."

Each year, the Aurora Police Department aims to raise as much money as possible for Special Olympics of Illinois with several events. This year, the department hosted a motorcycle rally as well as a "tag day," where they solicited funds outside local businesses. The funds go the Special Olympics of Illinois Summer Games, as well as local Special Olympics programs.

Podschweit attended the Summer Games last year and said he was deeply moved by the experience.

"I had the chance to go to the games last year in Bloomington," he said. "It was pretty incredible to see what it meant not only to the athletes but also to their families."

"Run for the Athletes" welcomes runners and walkers, and prizes will be given to the top winners.

"The top male and female will get a trophy and second place will get medallions," Podschweit said. "There will be popcorn, bananas, water and bagels, too. It will be a lot of fun."
