Cultural calendar: Narrative paintings exhibit

Narrative paintings: Art exhibits, music, film, theater performances and lectures highlight Aurora University's Celebrating Arts and Ideas series for 2009-2010. Events are free. "Aurora, Apollo and Others: Narrative Paintings by J.M. Mesple," paintings, drawings and prints exploring mythological imagery in a contemporary context, will be on display in the Schingoethe Art Gallery in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. Native American exhibit: Displays, art exhibits and lectures highlight 2009-2010 events at Aurora University's Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. Admission is free. At 7 p.m. "A Traditional Woman in a Contemporary World," a lecture by Marjorie Waheneka, a member of the Confederated Umatilla Tribes of Eastern Oregon, will be held.

Nov. 5

Fall Musical: Waubonsee Community College's Theatre Department will present the original musical revue "On the Tilt-A-Whirl of Love" at 8 p.m. today through Nov. 7 in the auditorium of the college's Sugar Grove campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. Professor of Communications Maria Bakalis wrote and is directing the show, which likens love to an amusement park, with the different rides representing the different stages of a relationship. Advance tickets are available for $4 by calling Bakalis at 630-466-7900, Ext. 2393. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $5.

"Lion in Winter": The Albright Theatre Company presents "The Lion in Winter," the historical play by James Goldman. "The Lion in Winter" provides a fictional glimpse into the lives of England's King Henry II and his dysfunctional family in 1183. John Dryden of Batavia plays Henry. The show runs today through Nov. 8, as well as Nov. 13-15 and 20-21. The Albright Theatre is on the third floor of the Batavia Government building, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia. Performance times will be 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $13 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Get $1 off each ticket with a donation of a gently used coat. "The Sound of Music": The Fine Arts Department at Rosary High School will present its fall musical "The Sound of Music" today through Nov. 8. This 50th anniversary production of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical features more than 60 student actors and a full orchestra. Tickets are $9; $7 for seniors/children 12 and under. Purchase at the school office. All performances are held in the McEnroe Auditorium at Rosary High School, 901 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m.

"Never Mind What Happens, How Did it End?": When movie star Penny Loring returns to her hometown after many years abroad to visit her daughter Donna's family, she is surprised by more than how much her granddaughters have grown. Decisions must be made and relationships forged in Yorkville High School's fall play, "Never Mind What Happens, How Did it End?," which takes the stage at 7 p.m. today and Nov. 7 in the Cafetorium.
