Bulldogs settle for second place, Vikings third Western Sun
The Batavia's boys tennis team entered Day 2 of the Western Sun Conference meet in the mix with Glenbard South in the race for the team title. And the Bulldogs had three head-to-head matchups with the Raiders to help determine the outcome. But Glenbard South won all three of those matches, plus two other individual titles, to edge Batavia for the crown, 28-24.
Kyle Schalz tossed a one-hitter as Rosary captured the Suburban Catholic conference title with a 7-0 win over Aurora Central. Shalz finished with 15 strikeouts on the day for the Royals, now 13-10 overall and 12-2 in league play. Brenda Rocha paced Rosary at the plate with three RBIs, Jessica Fortier added two RBIs and Schalz had two hits.

Headliners don't disappoint
One, two, three jump. Sounds easy. And it sure looked easy when she breezed through the 100-meter hurdles in a blistering 13.50 seconds, a personal record. But Natalie Tarter would be the first to tell you, it's anything but easy.
Geneva, Batavia, Kaneland finish 1-2-3
Andrew Nelson and Joe Augustine hit the trifecta Friday during the Western Sun Conference Meet at Campbell Field. Each Viking won three events and helped pace Geneva to a conference title with 155.5 points and spoil the evening for rival Batavia.

BATAVIA -- Strong pitching. Timely hitting. Solid defense. Following Geneva's 3-0 Western Sun Conference victory over rival Batavia on Friday afternoon, there wasn't much that Geneva coach Greg Dierks could find fault with his team's performance.
AU softball stays alive in NCAA tourney
The Aurora University Spartan softball team avenged two early season losses against North Central College Cardinals with an 8-0 victory in five innings in an elimination game at the 2008 NCAA Division III Softball Championships in Eau Claire, Wis.

Geneva High gymnast Kosog is one of a kind
When Geneva senior Kai Kosog tells his classmates that he is a gymnast for the Vikings, people are often surprised since the school does not have a boys gymnastics team.
Vikings are second to West Aurora in Kane meet
GENEVA -- It is a meet like no other and the oldest in the state. Packed with talent, the 90th annual Kane County Track and Field Invitational provided the several hundred fans at Burgess Field Friday night plenty of reason to cheer.
When Joe Blanton was pitching for the Kane County Cougars in 2003, he was touted as one of the top prospects in the Oakland organization.

West badminton players qualify for state
The West Aurora badminton team qualified one singles player and two doubles teams for next week's state tournament and placed second as a team at the Lockport Sectional with 11.5 points. Lockport won the team title with 16 points.
The Peoria Chiefs and Kane County Cougars will play a regular season game at Wrigley Field at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, believed to be the first minor league contest to take place at Wrigley in the ballpark’s 94-year history.

Batavia scored 106 points to win the girls' team title at the Kane County Track and Field Meet. West Aurora was second with 91.5 points, Geneva third (91 points), Kaneland fifth (62), Rosary 7th (43) and Aurora Christian 10th (one point).

MAPLE PARK -- It took Andrew Nelson just 4:17.04 to shatter Steve Gramsch's long-standing 1600-meter run Peterson Prep record Saturday at Kaneland High School.
BATAVIA -- After falling behind 2-1 in the second inning, Batavia's Joe Aguilar came in as reliever and held Oswego scoreless in the remaining five innings as the Bulldogs rallied for a 5-2 victory Saturday.

Rosary's Schalz hurls second straight perfect game
Rosary pitcher Kylie Schalz threw here second straight perfect game as the Royals set down St. Francis, 8-0, in a Suburban Catholic conference softball game Wednesday. Schalz (3-2) struck out nine and also contributed two hits and two RBIs at the plate, while Colleen Van Bogaert homered and had three RBIs, Andi DeKing added two RBIs and Brenda Rocha banged out two hits.
Time to make high school baseball an autumn sport
High school baseball was rained out -- again -- late last week, and some coaches were worried there's not enough time to make them up. With so many washouts already and with the conference season in full swing, the number of open dates is running out.
