STNG NEWS ALERTS ::
Marine Sgt. Darren Thul will finish his military service in September. The 2001 graduate of Warren High School enlisted that year and has served three tours of duty, one in Haiti and two in Iraq. Someday, sandstorms and "sweating bullets" in 120-degree heat will be a distant memory for U.S. Marine Sgt. Darren Thul. Thul, who will turn 25 on Monday, returned a week ago from a second deployment to Iraq. In two months, he will have completed an eight-year stint with the Marine Corps, the last four as a reservist with the Waukegan Marine Reserve Unit. He is looking forward to finding a good job as a mechanic and settling into a more normal life with his bride, Angi.

Mettawa family mourns son, 36; dies climbing favorite ski haunt
Scottie Zenko's family says a stark lesson about altitude sickness emerged from his Aug. 22 death while hiking Alta Mountain in Utah. "He had a house out there, perfectly healthy, 36 years old, never been sick a day in his life," said his father, John. "(His death) is absolute proof that altitude is poisonous for people who aren't used to it."

A tennis court at Mallard Ridge Park in Lindenhurst has been striped for pickleball. "I had to do some research when it was first suggested, because I had never heard of pickleball," admitted Park District Director Tom Lippert. Village trustee Carol Zerba, a fan of the game that is popular in Florida, suggested the park district establish a pickleball court.

The Antioch Sequoits broke open a close first half, scoring the first two times they touched the ball in the second half on the way to a 37-21 win over the Grayslake Central Rams. Speed demon Cameron White took the opening kickoff of the second half and ran 95 yards, untouched, for a touchdown to give his team a 30-21 lead.
