My veggies are plenty green

I love local farmers markets, because I can get produce I don't normally get. I pay less than I'd pay at a specialty store and I know it didn't take tons of carbon to come to me. This week, I'm tackling the Sputnik of veggies: kohlrabi. What are you buying/growing/getting locally? Is it from your garden, a farmers market or a CSA box?

This camp brings together kids, cops

The last school bus pulls up near the picnic pavillion at Pilcher Park and the kids rush to get on. Several police officers watch from picnic tables as the boys and girls
made up of 10- to 12-year-olds from every ethnic group and neighborhood
in the city run across the field. Some of them turn to wave before
boarding.
Lane Bryant case won't be on TV
Police recently turned down the chance to tell the story of the Lane Bryant massacre investigation on national TV. That's because it was a cold-case show and the Lane Bryant

Daisy is all ready for the Fourth of July weekend, wearing her patriotic spirit on more than her sleeve.
For East, it's baptism under fire

For the new kid on the area high school football block, varsity-level
competition arrived without so much as the sounding of a full-speed
ahead whistle. Rather, there was some brief stretching. A little game of catch. Then, Plainfield East met Naperville North. The two hooked up in Round One of 7-on-7 play Tuesday night.
Correll's heroics lift JackHammers

The Joliet JackHammers scheduled fireworks for after Thursday's night series finale with the Kansas City T-Bones.But JackHammer manager Wally Backman didn't want to make the crowd of
3,892 wait until after the game, which ended with Brad Correll's
two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning that snapped
the Hammers' six-game losing streak and gave them a 6-4 win.

Crisp whites, cool reds for summer

Wine isn't like your wardrobe. No need to wait until Memorial Day to bring out the whites or save that sparkly red for a holiday party. Still, there is some reason to sip with the season — as the temperature climbs think crisp, light, tangy.
