Police: Man leaves shot friend for dead
A man was critically injured when he was shot while walking with a wanted man Sunday night. Sources
indicated the 23-year-old victim was in "extremely critical condition"
at Silver Cross Hospital where he was taken after being shot three
times. One bullet grazed the victim's forehead, but another pierced his
forehead, traveling into his brain. A third shot struck one of his
vertebrae, paralyzing him from the neck down.
Residents question tax hike
A proposed hike in property taxes faced more questions Monday from homeowners and the Joliet City Council. A 20 percent increase in the city tax rate already was facing criticism. >But
at the budget meeting Monday, staff noted that the actual increase in
the city's portion of a property tax bill would be closer to 24 percent
because a past abatement is being eliminated.

Plainfield S. puts pedal to the metal
This was not the way Jeremy Izzo's debut as the Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball coach was supposed to go. The game plan was to get back on defense and force lightning-quick Plainfield South to settle for jump shots. Instead,
the opposite. The Cougars, who press all the way to create offensive
opportunities, got the ball inside time after time to score a 70-61
victory Monday night.

Making the best of Turkey Day dinner disasters

The turkey’s still frozen solid. The gravy comes out lumpy. The guests arrive before the food is finished. Big holiday dinners can be tough to orchestrate. Don't worry. Most kitchen failures can be fixed with a little ingenuity and flexibility. If the buttered carrots morph into carrot soup or the cake becomes “pudding” at the last minute, no one needs to know that isn’t what you’d planned all along. The most important thing is to keep your cool.

Who is Oprah's heir apparent in daytime?

Will it be Ellen DeGeneres, Dr. Phil or Dr. Oz? Maybe none of the
above. The announced shutdown of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in two years
creates room for a new queen (or king) of daytime television. "You haven't had a time period like this open up in 25 years," says media analyst
Larry Gerbrandt. "It really gives the players a chance to reshuffle the
deck."
