Update: Nicor employee Gary Cichy, 52, of Hinckley, died from injuries after his truck struck a piece of equipment that then fell on top of him on Leverenz Road about a block east of Book Road. Emergency crews had sought the aid of a medical helicopter to rush the man to the hospital, but foggy conditions precluded its use. Instead, the worker was taken by ambulance to Edward Hospital in Naperville.

Last year, Shari Sopourn was trying to find a way to teach her kids about the recent government bailout of financial institutions. In the process, she and her husband, Jordy, created Bailout!, a board game that is a sort of anti-Monopoly.

Tomcats withstand Chargers just long enough
So, what did we learn about East Aurora from Monday's season-opening 79-74 win over St. Joseph in a battle of two ranked teams? To borrow from former NFL coach Dennis Green, the Tomcats are who we thought they were, and then some. It's awfully early, but this has the potential to be a special season.

Panthers shake off cobwebs, corral Warriors with pressure
The opening night of competition following a trip to the state finals couldn't have gone any better for Oswego, as the Panthers used their experience and a bit of patience to overcome an early 10-point deficit and turn it into a 20-point romp over Waubonsie Valley in the Hoops For Healing Tournament on Monday night in Oswego.

Making the best of Turkey Day dinner disasters
The turkey’s still frozen solid. The gravy comes out lumpy. The guests arrive before the food is finished. Big holiday dinners can be tough to orchestrate. Don't worry. Most kitchen failures can be fixed with a little ingenuity and flexibility. If the buttered carrots morph into carrot soup or the cake becomes “pudding” at the last minute, no one needs to know that isn’t what you’d planned all along. The most important thing is to keep your cool.

Who is Oprah's heir apparent in daytime?
Will it be Ellen DeGeneres, Dr. Phil or Dr. Oz? Maybe none of the above. The announced shutdown of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in two years creates room for a new queen (or king) of daytime television. "You haven't had a time period like this open up in 25 years," says media analyst Larry Gerbrandt. "It really gives the players a chance to reshuffle the deck."
